Scribble Submission Guidelines

Scribble is a forum dedicated to the publication of excellent short fiction, poetry, and creative and personal essays.

Some of our best work begins as an idea, a fleeting thought scribbled on a napkin or jotted on the back of an envelope or metaphorically scribbled on our memory banks.  It is through exploration of and experimentation with these scribbles that we become writers.

Scribble is looking for submissions of poetry up to 30 lines, creative and short fiction, personal essays, and stand-alone novel excerpts up to 3,000 words.  Subject matter is open. We occasionally publish longer poetry, but it must be exceptional, as our format is more suited to shorter pieces.

With your submission, please include a brief author’s biography and any publication history of your piece. Hardcopy submissions will only be returned if accompanied by an SASE with sufficient postage. If you prefer to be contacted by email or if you do not want your submission returned, please note this in your cover letter.

We do accept simultaneous submissions and previously published pieces that have not appeared in our distribution area. Please let us know as soon as possible if your piece has been accepted by another publication. Please limit your submission to 2-3 prose pieces or 5 poems. If you submit hardcopy, please do not staple your work; use paperclips instead. On all submissions, whether by traditional mail or email, include complete contact information — address, telephone number, and email address — on the first page of your submission, and number your pages. Include your last name and piece title in the header of subsequent pages. Emailed submissions should be attached as MS Word, RTF, or PDF files.

Email submissions to: Put  “Submission” and your last name in the subject line.

Due to the number of submissions we receive, we are sometimes notoriously slow at responding. If you haven’t heard anything after 2-3 months, please drop us an email and we’ll let you know where your submission is in the process. We do read every submission all of the way through, so it takes time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Upon acceptance, Scribble retains First North American Serial Rights until publication, at which time all rights revert to the author. Scribble pays what we call ‘coffee to pizza’ money — $5.00 to $15.00 — for each piece accepted for publication, plus a contributor’s copy. We wish we could pay more and hope to be able to in the future.

If you are interested in submitting black & white cover photography or art, please contact us at the email address below. Payment is similar to what we pay for our written pieces.
